What’s in Your Way?

You May Be Your Biggest Limiting Factor

You know you want to be moving more, or be moving more regularly. You have tried to go all-or-nothing on a fitness commitment and when something comes up and you miss a day, things are quickly derailed and it takes you weeks to “get back into it”. I have seen and experienced this for myself so many times.

Most of the time, the limiting factors that lead to derailment are based on beliefs we have created ourselves around working out. That it must look and feel a certain way.

Raise your hand if you have ever felt personally victimized by one of these thoughts:

Workouts need to be intense every time.

Workouts need to be at least ‘x’ number of minutes.

Workouts need to burn ‘x’ number of calories.

Workouts need to feel very hard.

Workouts need to make me sore.

Workouts need to happen in the morning or the whole day is a wash.

Workouts need to happen at the gym/studio.

Workouts need to happen with friends at a pre-booked time or I won’t do them.

Workouts need to contain a large variety of different movements to keep me engaged.

Workouts need to happen ‘x’ number of times per week.

Workouts need to happen undistracted/without my kids around.

Workouts need to happen in workout clothes.

Firstly, you are not wrong or bad for having had these thoughts or beliefs! I would, however, like you to challenge each of these statements by questioning whether any of them are actually true?

Where are you making things more challenging or complicated than they need to be? What’s the story you have created about working out that might be getting in your way? Could you flip the script and make things a whole lot easier on yourself? What if your thoughts turned towards:

Workouts can be simple.

Workouts can feel easy and still be moving me towards my goals.

Workouts can be short and still be moving me towards my goals.

Workouts can leave me feeling strong and able.

Workouts can be … [fill in the blank].

Feels better, right?

Give it a shot and see if you can get out of your own way today.

Onward,

xo Sydney
